Used Compact Cars Just Posted Their First Up-Week Since May

Canadian Black Book’s car segment ticked positive. Compact cars led. That is Civic territory, not a reason to wait for a crash.

Canadian used wholesale values were nearly flat in the week ending September 5: the overall market was down 0.05%, versus a 0.20% decline the week before. The car segment rose 0.01%, its first positive week since early May. Compact cars led at +0.47%. Truck and SUV values were down 0.09%. Subcompact crossover and SUV values jumped 1.01%. Auction sale rates averaged 36%. The 14-day moving average listing price on about 160,000 Canadian dealer-lot used vehicles was about $38,500. Canadian Auto Dealer

What it means: People keep asking me whether used Hondas are about to get cheap. This print does not say that. It says depreciation slowed, cars stopped going the wrong way for the first time since spring, and the compact-car slice — Civic’s used neighbourhood — was the one that actually rose. Subcompact crossovers, HR-V territory, rose even more. I will not invent a Civic-specific dollar change Canadian Black Book did not publish. I will also not treat a 0.47% weekly move as a boom. It is a stop in the slide, not a lottery ticket.

On the lot, the useful check is still the car in front of you: kilometres, options, and service history on the CARFAX report — not a paper service-receipt pile most used vehicles never come with. CBB also noted stronger new-vehicle sales, an estimated 168,000 units in August, up 5.4%. That is an industry volume figure, not a Honda Canada retail table. Honda Canada still has not posted August units, which I covered on September 9.

My prediction: By December 11, 2026, Canadian Black Book’s published 14-day moving average used listing price for Canadian dealer lots will still be at or above $37,000. I will be wrong if that reported figure is below $37,000.

If you're buying right now: If a clean used Civic or HR-V already fits, do not park the deal waiting for wholesale to crack. Start with the car you can see this week on today’s best pre-owned Honda, then read the CARFAX service-history entries before you argue about a 0.47% weekly print.

Quick answers

Did used car values rise in Canada in early September 2026?

For the week ending September 5, Canadian Black Book said the overall used market was nearly flat, down 0.05%. The car segment rose 0.01%, its first positive week since early May. Compact cars led at +0.47%. Truck and SUV values were down 0.09%.

What happened to used compact SUVs that week?

Canadian Black Book said subcompact crossover and SUV values jumped 1.01% in the week ending September 5, the largest increase across the market. That is the segment an HR-V shopper is in. Compact cars, the Civic’s used-market neighbourhood, rose 0.47%.

Should I wait for used Honda prices to crash this fall?

Not on this print. The wholesale market was nearly flat, auction sale rates averaged 36%, and the 14-day moving average listing price on Canadian dealer lots was about $38,500. Waiting for a collapse is a bet against the report in front of you. Check the actual car and the CARFAX service-history entries.

Shopping a used Civic off this print?

Send the year, kilometres and the asking price you saw. I will tell you whether that unit is the market, or whether a different Honda on the lot is the cleaner buy — without pretending a weekly 0.47% is your discount.
