Toyota Canada Inc. sold a record 14,461 electrified vehicles in August 2026, up 35.6% year over year, representing 64.3% of the company's overall 22,473 units sold that month. Toyota Division alone was 65.2% electrified; Lexus Division, which also set an August sales record at 2,775 units, was 58.2% electrified. What it means: This isn't a one-model story anymore. When almost two-thirds of a mainstream brand's monthly sales are hybrid, PHEV or BEV, hybrid has stopped being the upsell trim and become the default a shopper expects walking onto any compact-SUV lot — CR-V included. Honda Canada doesn't publish a monthly Canadian sales breakdown by trim, so I won't invent a CR-V Hybrid take-rate number here. What Honda has said, in a January 2026 release about full-year 2025 Accord sales, is that hybrid-electric trims already made up almost 75% of Accord sales in Canada — background context, not today's news, but it tells you this shift wasn't Toyota-only even before August's numbers landed.
For a CR-V shopper, the practical read is that gas is no longer the trim you default to and hybrid the one you have to ask for — it's flipping. CR-V Hybrid is rated 6.4 L/100 km combined with standard Real Time AWD™. That's the line to hold next to whatever RAV4 Hybrid trim you're quoted, spec for spec, before sticker price ever enters the conversation.
My prediction: by March 2027, more than half of the CR-V test drives I book at Maple Honda will be for the Hybrid trim specifically rather than gas, because Toyota's 64% electrified share is training GTA compact-SUV shoppers to ask for hybrid by default before they ever reach my desk. I'll be wrong if gas CR-V test drives still outnumber Hybrid ones at that point.
If you're buying right now: If you're cross-shopping a hybrid RAV4 against a CR-V, don't lead with sticker price — line up the same-trim fuel rating and AWD system first, then check this month's Honda Canada program before you decide gas or hybrid on the CR-V side.
