Quick answer
Here's my rule for Honda buyers in Vaughan and the GTA. On a lease of up to 5 years, put 0 to 10% down. On a 7-year finance, put 20 to 30% down. A lease already covers you if the car is written off, so cash up front mostly just sits at risk. On a long loan, a bigger down payment keeps you from owing more than the car is worth.
How much should I put down on a Honda lease?
On a lease of 5 years or less, I tell people to put down 0 to 10% of the price. 10% is the most I'd suggest. Zero is often better.
Here's why. A lease already comes with gap and total-loss protection. If the car is written off or stolen, that protection pays off what you owe on the lease. It doesn't give you back the cash you put down. So the money you put down buys you a lower payment, and if the car is gone in month eight, the money is gone too. Check how the protection works in your own lease contract before you sign.
Keep the term at 5 years or less, too. That way more of your payments fall inside Honda Canada's new-vehicle warranty. At the end you can buy the car or hand it back and start over. My lease return guide covers that last month.
How much should I put down on a Honda finance?
On a 7-year finance, I suggest putting down 20 to 30% of the price. This is where a down payment really does something for you.
A new car often loses 20% or more of its value in the first year, and a 7-year loan pays down slowly at the start. So with little or nothing down, you can owe more than the car is worth for a long time. That's called negative equity. It only hurts on the day you want out early: an accident, a growing family, a move. A bigger down payment closes the gap faster. It also cuts the total interest you pay.
If you're already dealing with negative equity, the negative equity explainer shows how it gets rolled into a new loan and what that costs.
What 0-10% and 20-30% look like on a $40,000 car
Here's the rule on a round $40,000 car, before tax. It isn't a quote on any specific Honda. The percentages are on the pre-tax price, and Ontario's 13% HST goes on top.
Down payment on a $40,000 example price, Ontario
| Plan | My range | Down payment | What it protects against |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lease, up to 5 years | 0% | $0 | Nothing to lose if the car is written off |
| Lease, up to 5 years | 10% | $4,000 | A lower payment. This is the most I'd put at risk |
| Finance, 7 years | 20% | $8,000 | Owing more than the car is worth early on |
| Finance, 7 years | 30% | $12,000 | The same, plus less total interest |
With 13% HST, the $40,000 car comes to $45,200 before licensing. On the 7-year finance, 20% down leaves $37,200 to borrow, and 30% down leaves $33,200. Real numbers depend on the trim and this month's program. Check the Honda deals page.

Why the lease and finance numbers are so different
A lease and a loan carry different risks, so a down payment does a different job in each. On a lease, the risk to your cash is losing the car early, and the lease's own protection already covers what you owe. On a long loan, the risk is the car losing value faster than you pay it off. Only equity fixes that, and you get equity from a down payment or from time.
That's why I'd rather see a lease customer keep their savings in the bank, and a finance customer put real money down. The same $10,000 is idle risk on one and real protection on the other. Still choosing between the two? My lease vs finance guide has the full math.
Is zero down ever fine on a Honda finance?
Zero down can work on a shorter term, or if you plan to keep the car well past the end of the loan. It goes wrong on a 7-year loan if you usually change cars every three or four years. You show up at trade-in time owing more than the car is worth.
If you'd rather keep your cash, there's another way. Most auto loans in Canada have no prepayment penalty, so you can put less down now and pay extra toward the principal later. Make sure the loan you sign allows it.
Does my trade-in count as a down payment?
Yes. Trade-in equity counts the same as cash. Say your trade is worth $15,000 and you owe $6,000 on it. The $9,000 difference is your down payment, and on a $40,000 car that's already over 20%.
It works the other way too. If your trade is worth less than you owe, the shortfall gets added to the new loan. That's the opposite of a down payment. Before you decide how much cash to bring, find out what your car is worth with the trade-in value guide.
What if I am new to Canada or rebuilding credit?
If your credit file is thin or damaged, a lender may ask for more down than my rule suggests. That's the lender's call, not a rule of thumb, and it's good to know before you shop. The new-to-Canada financing page explains how that conversation usually goes.
Whatever your situation, text me the price, the term and what you plan to put down. I'll tell you honestly whether your down payment is doing any work.
Common questions
Is it smart to put money down on a car lease?
Usually only a little. I suggest 0 to 10% of the price on a Honda lease. A bigger down payment lowers your payment, but if the car is written off or stolen early on, you don't get it back. The lease's gap protection covers what you owe, not what you prepaid.
How much should I put down on a 7-year car loan?
I suggest 20 to 30% of the price. A new car can lose 20% or more of its value in the first year, and a long loan pays down slowly. With a small down payment, you can owe more than the car is worth for years.
Can my trade-in count as the down payment?
Yes. Trade equity is what your trade is worth minus anything you still owe on it, and it works the same as cash. If you owe more than the trade is worth, that negative equity works against you and adds to what you borrow.
Does a bigger down payment get me a lower Honda finance rate?
Not usually. Honda Canada sets its promotional finance and lease rates by program, model and term. A down payment changes how much you borrow and how many dollars of interest you pay. Whether you're approved depends on your credit, which is a separate question.
