Short version: Geely, one of China's largest car makers, says its main brand will start selling in Canada in 2027 and is building a retail and service network now. It hasn't named a single model, a price or a dealer location. For anyone buying a car in the next six months, nothing changes. For anyone on a lease that ends in 2027 or 2028, there may be one more brand on the shopping list.
On October 9, Geely Auto said it has started setting up local operations in Canada and is developing a retail and service network with partners who know the market. First vehicles are planned for 2027. Geely didn't disclose models, powertrains, pricing or locations, and said those details will follow. Its Canadian website, geely.ca, went live shortly before the announcement. CnEVPost
Why Geely can do this now
Canada agreed in January to let up to 49,000 China-made EVs in each year at the regular 6.1% tariff. Before that, a 100% surtax made those cars uncompetitive here. A quota that size is small next to the whole market. DesRosiers estimates about 168,000 new vehicles were sold in Canada in September alone. But it's enough to support a launch.
What it means: Geely isn't a small start-up. Its parent group is the majority owner of Volvo Cars and Lotus, Zeekr is part of Geely Auto, and it builds EVs in very large numbers at home. When a company that size says "retail and service network," it's planning to be here for years, not testing the water. The open questions are the ones a buyer cares about: what the cars cost after freight and tax, where you get one serviced, and what it's worth when you trade it in.
That last one is where I'd be careful. A brand with no Canadian history has no Canadian resale history. On the floor, the trade-in number is often what decides a deal, and nobody can quote a three-year value on a car that has never been sold here.
My predictions
My prediction: By March 31, 2027, Geely will name at least one model it will sell in Canada and publish a Canadian starting price for it, because a 2027 launch needs prices out in time for spring orders. I'm wrong if either is missing on that date.
My prediction: By October 31, 2027, a Geely-brand vehicle will be on sale at a retail location in the Greater Toronto Area. Ontario is the largest market in the country and the GTA is where a new brand gets seen. I'm wrong if there's no Geely retail location selling cars in the GTA by that date.
If you're buying right now: don't hold off on a purchase for a brand that hasn't named a car yet. If an EV is on your list now, compare what you can actually buy and service today. My Tesla vs Honda comparison for Vaughan buyers covers the EV-or-hybrid question, and the CR-V Hybrid vs gas savings breakdown shows what a hybrid saves without needing a charger.
