Honda's next hybrid system has a name. 15 models are planned by 2030, mostly for North America.

Honda is calling it "Honda Hybrid." It starts in 2027. No model, no price and no Canadian date has been announced, so here is what it does and does not change for someone shopping this fall.

Short version: Honda has named its next hybrid system "Honda Hybrid" and plans 15 models with it by the end of March 2030, most of them for North America. The first arrive in 2027. Honda hasn't said which models come first or when any of them reach Canada. The Civic, CR-V and Accord hybrids on the lot today use the current two-motor e:HEV system, and nothing in this announcement changes them.

On October 9, Honda said its next-generation hybrid system will be called Honda Hybrid, and that the same name will be used worldwide. It builds on e:HEV, Honda's two-motor hybrid, with upgrades to the engine, the drive unit and the control software. The new models sit on a newly developed platform and add a new electric all-wheel-drive system. Honda plans 15 of them by the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2030, introduced from 2027 and "primarily in North America." Honda global newsroom

What it means

What it means: this is a name and a count, not a product. Honda didn't give a fuel-economy figure, an engine size or a single model name. The useful signal is the direction. Since May, Honda has been moving development money toward hybrids, and 15 models in about three years, aimed mostly at our side of the Pacific, is a large commitment for a brand whose Canadian hybrid lineup today is the Civic, the CR-V and the Accord.

The pressure is easy to see. Toyota Canada sold 15,077 electrified vehicles in September, 67.1% of everything it sold that month, and its 2026 electrified total has already passed all of 2025 with a quarter still to go. Toyota Canada Honda needs more hybrid models to compete with that, and this announcement is the plan to get them.

One thing worth separating: the next-generation CR-V Hybrid. Last week I wrote about reports that its production slipped to spring 2027. Honda Canada hasn't announced that car, and Honda didn't say it will be the first Honda Hybrid model. On the sales floor that's the question I'll get, and the honest answer today is that nobody outside Honda knows.

My predictions

My prediction: By April 14, 2027, Honda will publicly name at least one specific model that uses the Honda Hybrid system, because a 2027 global launch needs a named car on a stage before then. I'm wrong if no model is named by that date.

My prediction: The first Honda Hybrid model sold in Canada will be a CR-V, and it will be on Canadian dealer lots by October 31, 2027. The CR-V is Honda's highest-volume model here and the one Toyota's RAV4 hybrid is pulling buyers from. I'm wrong if a different model arrives first, or if no Honda Hybrid model is on Canadian lots by that date.

If you're buying right now: don't put a purchase on hold for a system that has no model and no Canadian date. Today's e:HEV hybrids are the current technology, and if your timeline is the next six months they're what you'll be choosing from. If you're deciding between a hybrid CR-V and a RAV4 hybrid now, my CR-V Hybrid vs RAV4 Hybrid vs Tucson Hybrid comparison lays out the trade-offs, and the Honda hybrid lineup for Canada has every model on sale now.

Quick answers

What is Honda Hybrid?

Honda Hybrid is the name Honda announced on October 9, 2026 for its next-generation hybrid system. It builds on the current two-motor e:HEV system with an upgraded engine, drive unit and controls, a new platform and a new electric all-wheel-drive system. The first models arrive from 2027.

Which Honda models will get the Honda Hybrid system?

Honda hasn't said. It plans 15 models with the system by March 31, 2030, mostly for North America, but no specific model or Canadian launch date has been announced.

Should I wait for the new Honda Hybrid instead of buying a hybrid now?

Only if your timeline runs well past 2027. No Honda Hybrid model or Canadian date has been announced. The Civic, CR-V and Accord hybrids on sale now use the current e:HEV system and are what you can actually buy in the next six months.

Weighing a hybrid now against waiting?

Tell me which model and how long you keep a car. I will lay out what is on the lot now next to what is known, and not known, about what is coming.
