Short version: Toyota says the refreshed 2027 Lexus NX will keep coming out of its Cambridge, Ont., plant. The Ontario-built NX is reported to be hybrid only, since the entry gas NX is being dropped. If you want a hybrid SUV built in Ontario, you now have a Lexus and a Honda to pick from, and they sit at very different prices.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada will keep building the refreshed 2027 Lexus NX at its Cambridge North plant, next to the RAV4. The plug-in NX stays in Japan, and with the entry gas NX discontinued, the Canadian-built NX is reported to be hybrid only. Toyota's plant spokesperson said the company is "fully committed to making cars in Canada for the long-term." About 85% of what Toyota builds in Ontario is exported, mostly to the U.S. Motor Illustrated
Why this matters to a Honda shopper
Most people I talk to don't cross-shop an NX against a CR-V. The price gap is too wide. But they ask the same two questions about both: is it a hybrid, and where is it built?
For Honda, the second answer is already Ontario. Honda builds the gas CR-V and the CR-V Hybrid at Plant 2 in Alliston. honda.ca rates the CR-V Hybrid at 6.4 L/100 km combined.
Toyota dropping the gas NX tells you where the money is going. Lexus buyers in this size mostly pay for the hybrid anyway, so a gas base model was doing little work. Honda is on the same road. It has said its next hybrid system goes into 15 new models starting in 2027, and that the next Civic and CR-V sit on a new platform built for it.
One caution. "Built in Canada" doesn't change the sticker. A Lexus built in Cambridge is still priced as a Lexus. What it can change is supply: an Ontario plant is a shorter trip to a GTA lot than a ship from Japan.
My predictions
My prediction: lexus.ca's 2027 NX lineup will have no gas-only NX by April 30, 2027, because Toyota has already dropped the entry gas model from Ontario production. I'm wrong if lexus.ca lists a 2027 NX without a hybrid or plug-in powertrain on that date.
My prediction: By October 31, 2027, Honda will confirm that the next-generation CR-V, on its new hybrid platform, will be built at Alliston, because Alliston already builds both CR-V powertrains and an Ontario line kept busy with hybrids is exactly what Toyota just doubled down on. I'm wrong if Honda names a different plant for the Canadian-market next-generation CR-V, or says nothing by that date.
If you're buying right now: if a Lexus is on your list, decide first whether you're paying for the badge or the hybrid. If it's the hybrid, my Lexus vs Honda comparison for Vaughan buyers walks through what the extra money buys, and the CR-V Hybrid vs gas savings breakdown shows what the hybrid saves you.
Quick answers
Where is the Lexus NX built for Canada?
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada builds the Lexus NX at its Cambridge North plant in Ontario, alongside the RAV4. Toyota said in October 2026 that it will keep building the refreshed 2027 NX there. The plug-in hybrid NX is still built in Japan.
Is the 2027 Lexus NX hybrid only?
The Ontario-built 2027 NX is reported to be hybrid only, because the entry gas-only NX is being dropped. The plug-in hybrid NX continues as a separate import from Japan. Check lexus.ca for the final Canadian trim list.
Is the Honda CR-V Hybrid built in Canada?
Yes. Honda builds the CR-V Hybrid, along with the gas CR-V, at Plant 2 of Honda of Canada Manufacturing in Alliston, Ontario. honda.ca rates the CR-V Hybrid at 6.4 L/100 km combined.

Tell me what you drive now and how far you commute. I'll show you what a CR-V Hybrid costs to run next to whatever else is on your list.
