The news: Nikkei Asia reported on September 18 that Honda Motor plans to accelerate mass production of next-generation hybrid vehicles by several months, aiming to start building a hybrid CR-V in North America as early as February 2027. Nikkei tied the move to strong U.S. hybrid sales and high gasoline prices, and illustrated the story with a CR-V photographed at Honda’s Ontario plant. Honda Canada has not published that February date, a plant assignment, or a next-generation CR-V Hybrid page. Nikkei Asia
Updated October 7, 2026: Nikkei has since reported that this February target slipped to at least April 2027. Honda Canada still has not announced the vehicle. Read the update: Honda is reportedly keeping the current CR-V on the line longer.
What it means: Two different CR-V Hybrids are getting mixed together in the same sentence. The one on honda.ca today is the current two-motor system: a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle engine, 204 horsepower combined, 247 lb-ft, and as little as 6.4 L/100 km with Real Time AWD. Gas CR-V is still listed at 7.8 L/100 km combined in 2WD and 8.4 with Real Time AWD. Honda of Canada Manufacturing in Alliston already builds that CR-V Hybrid at Plant 2. That is the car I can walk a Vaughan shopper into this week.
The next-generation hybrid is a different product. Honda’s May 14, 2026 business briefing said it would begin launching next-generation hybrid models with an all-new hybrid system and platform starting in 2027, with 15 models globally by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2030, primarily in North America. Honda said it would aim to improve fuel economy of those next-generation hybrids by more than 10% and cut system costs by 30%, and to make all of its North American auto plants capable of producing hybrids. That briefing did not name a February 2027 CR-V production start. Nikkei is reporting an acceleration of that plan. It is not a Honda Canada on-sale date, and it is not proof Alliston will build the next-generation vehicle. I will not invent either.
My prediction: By December 18, 2026, honda.ca will still list the current two-motor CR-V Hybrid — 204 horsepower combined, as little as 6.4 L/100 km with Real Time AWD — and will not have replaced that listing with a next-generation CR-V Hybrid product page. I will be wrong if honda.ca publishes a next-generation CR-V Hybrid page before December 18.
If you’re buying right now: Do not sit out a CR-V Hybrid that already fits because a Tokyo factory date showed up in a headline. Production start is not a Vaughan delivery. Drive the current Alliston-built hybrid against the gas CR-V, then against the rival that already prints a hybrid mix — start with RAV4 vs CR-V in Vaughan if that is the cross-shop. Quick answers
Is Honda starting next-generation CR-V Hybrid production in February 2027?
Nikkei Asia reported on September 18, 2026 that Honda Motor plans to accelerate next-generation hybrid mass production by several months, aiming to start building a hybrid CR-V in North America as early as February 2027. Honda Canada has not published that date, plant or vehicle on hondanews.ca or honda.ca. A production start is not a Canadian dealer arrival.
Is the CR-V Hybrid on Canadian lots the next-generation system?
No. Honda.ca still lists the current CR-V Hybrid: a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle engine with two electric motors, 204 horsepower combined, 247 lb-ft, and as little as 6.4 L/100 km with Real Time AWD. Honda of Canada Manufacturing in Alliston already builds that CR-V Hybrid. Honda’s May 2026 business briefing said next-generation hybrid models with an all-new system and platform begin launching in 2027.
Should I wait to buy a CR-V Hybrid until the next-generation model arrives?
Not if a written September Honda Financial Services quote already fits. Honda Canada has not listed a next-generation CR-V Hybrid, a Canadian on-sale date, or a plant for that vehicle. The car on the lot is the current Alliston-built CR-V Hybrid. Confirm the live quote before September 30.
Shopping a CR-V off this headline?
Send the trim you are on and whether you were waiting for a “new hybrid.” I will tell you whether that wait is a real Canadian product or a factory date that is not on honda.ca.
