July Sold Fewer Cars. Canadians Still Spent More.

The official Statistics Canada print for July is the opposite of a volume boom: units down, dollars up, and ZEV share over 10%.

The news: Statistics Canada counted 176,156 new motor vehicles sold in Canada in July 2026, down 2.0% from July 2025. Dollar sales still rose 1.6%. Passenger cars were down 4.6%; trucks were down 1.6%. Zero-emission vehicles — battery-electric and plug-in hybrids, not conventional hybrids — totalled 18,920 units, up 36.0%, and made up 10.7% of the month versus 7.7% a year earlier. What it means: Last weekend’s industry estimate for August (about 168,000 units, up 5.4%) was a different month. July’s official print is the one that just landed, and it says the country bought fewer vehicles while spending more on the ones it did buy. That is a mix-and-price story, not a clearance story. Cars took the harder unit hit. ZEVs took a larger slice of a smaller pie. Honda Canada does not publish a matching monthly Canadian unit count, so I will not invent a Civic or CR-V number to sit beside StatCan’s total.

The ZEV line is the one people misread on a Honda lot. StatCan is explicit: zero-emission here means battery-electric and plug-in hybrid. A CR-V Hybrid or Civic Hybrid is not in that 10.7%. Honda’s current Canadian battery-electric listing is still the Prologue at select dealers. If you walked in wanting “whatever is electrified,” the car that actually matches how most Honda shoppers buy in Vaughan is still the hybrid, not a plug-in Honda Canada has not listed.

My prediction: When Statistics Canada publishes August 2026 new motor vehicle sales, the year-over-year unit change will be positive, even though July printed down 2.0%. I will be wrong if that August Daily also shows a year-over-year unit decline.

If you’re buying right now: Do not wait for a cheaper market on the back of July’s unit drop — dollars rose. If you are deciding gas versus hybrid on a CR-V, treat the 10.7% ZEV print as a BEV/PHEV share, not as a reason to skip the hybrid. I walk that trim gap on CR-V Hybrid vs gas savings.

Quick answers

How many new vehicles sold in Canada in July 2026?

Statistics Canada reported 176,156 new motor vehicles sold in Canada in July 2026, down 2.0% from July 2025. Sales in dollar terms rose 1.6% over the same period.

What share of July 2026 new-vehicle sales were zero-emission?

Statistics Canada counted 18,920 new zero-emission vehicles in July 2026, up 36.0% from a year earlier. That was 10.7% of total new motor vehicles sold, versus 7.7% in July 2025. StatCan defines ZEVs as battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, not conventional hybrids.

Does a CR-V Hybrid count as a zero-emission vehicle in this StatCan number?

No. Statistics Canada says the ZEV category includes battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. A Honda CR-V Hybrid or Civic Hybrid is a conventional hybrid, so it is not in that 10.7% share.

Send the trim you are on and whether you care more about unit-mix noise or the actual quote. I will tell you which one is in the room.
