Mazda Canada reported August 2026 sales of 7,592 vehicles, down 8.2% from 8,274 a year earlier. What it means: Honda Canada has not published an August 2026 sales release, so I will not invent a CR-V unit count. What Mazda did publish is still useful on this lot. The new CX-5 is taking compact-SUV shoppers who used to default to a gas CR-V or a RAV4. The rest of Mazda’s month is thinner. That split is what I hear in Vaughan: people who want the driver-feel crossover are showing up with a CX-5 quote, not a Mazda3 quote.
The spec gap that matters is powertrain, not a sales trophy. Mazda Canada lists the 2026 CX-5 as gas-only, 9.0 L/100 km combined, with standard i-Activ AWD. Honda Canada lists CR-V Hybrid at 6.4 L/100 km combined with standard Real Time AWD. Gas CR-V and CR-V Hybrid for the Canadian-market story are Alliston-built. Mazda’s same release reminded readers about its unlimited-kilometre comprehensive warranty. That is a real CX-5 talking point. I do treat it as a reason to put both written quotes on the same table, including residual and kilometres, instead of arguing brand slogans.
My prediction: Honda Canada’s October, November and December 2026 monthly programs will each still include a CR-V Hybrid lease-support line — bonus cash or a subvented lease APR — because the redesigned CX-5 is now the gas compact-SUV that used to default to a gas CR-V. I will be wrong if any of those three program months lists CR-V Hybrid with neither lease cash nor a subvented lease rate.
If you're buying right now: Bring the CX-5 trim, term and kilometres. I will put a CR-V Hybrid next to it on the September Honda Financial Services grid, which still runs through September 30. Do not pick the CX-5 only because it sold 3,150 units, and do not pick the CR-V only because it is Alliston-built. Pick the written number that fits the kilometres you actually drive.
