The three numbers
These are Honda Canada's published terms and they apply to every new Honda, base trim to top trim. Nobody gets a longer factory warranty for buying a more expensive car.
| Coverage | Term | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Comprehensive | 3 yr / 60,000 km | The broad coverage. Most of the vehicle, for the shortest period. |
| Powertrain | 5 yr / 100,000 km | Narrower but longer — the expensive mechanical core: engine, transmission, drive system. |
| Hybrid components | 8 yr / 160,000 km | Hybrid-specific parts. Longer than the powertrain term on any Honda. |
The detail people misread
Every one of these is whichever comes first. A vehicle at 62,000 km in its second year is out of comprehensive coverage, even though two of the three years remain. If you drive a lot — a long GTA commute, or ride-share work — your comprehensive coverage will end on kilometres, not on the calendar, and it will end sooner than you expect. Plan around the number that will run out first for your driving.
If you're buying a hybrid
The battery question comes up in nearly every hybrid conversation I have, usually phrased as "what happens when it dies".
The term
Hybrid components are covered 8 years / 160,000 km. Some Touring Hybrid trims carry a longer term of 10 years / 200,000 km where applicable — confirm the figure for the exact trim rather than assuming it applies, because it does not apply universally.
Why it rarely becomes your problem
Eight years is longer than most people keep a vehicle, and considerably longer than any lease term. If you are leasing for four years, the hybrid components are covered for twice the time you will own the car. That is worth saying plainly, because the fear of a battery bill talks people out of hybrids that would have saved them money.
What it does not cover
Hybrid coverage is for hybrid-specific components. The rest of the vehicle is on the normal 3 / 60,000 and 5 / 100,000 terms like any other Honda. A hybrid badge does not extend the comprehensive warranty on your door handles.
Get the trim confirmed in writing
Because the 10-year figure applies to some Touring Hybrid trims and not to others, this is exactly the sort of thing worth having confirmed for your specific vehicle before you sign. Send me the trim and I will confirm the term that applies to it.
Buying used: what Certified Used actually adds
Honda's Certified Used Vehicle program is one of the few certified programs where the extra cost is straightforwardly defensible. Here is precisely what it adds.
| What you get | The term |
|---|---|
| Powertrain coverage | 7 yr / 160,000 km from the original in-service date |
| Extension beyond the factory powertrain term | +2 yr / 60,000 km |
| Inspection | 100-point |
| Exchange privilege | 7 days / 1,000 km, whichever comes first |
| Vehicle history | CARFAX Canada report included |
Note the measurement point: the 7 years runs from the original in-service date, not from the day you buy it. On a three-year-old certified CR-V that leaves you four years of powertrain coverage, not seven. That distinction is worth understanding before you compare it against a private sale.
Honda Plus — what it adds, and what it duplicates
This is the part of the page that costs me money to write, and it is the reason the page exists.
What the product is
Honda Plus extended warranty plans run up to 8 years / 200,000 km in total. They can be purchased for vehicles up to 5 model years old and under 100,000 km. There is a $0 deductible on a covered component breakdown, and the plan is transferable at no cost under most conditions — which does genuinely help resale.
The overlap nobody mentions
If you are buying a brand-new Honda, your first 3 years / 60,000 km are already covered comprehensively and your powertrain to 5 years / 100,000 km. An extended plan whose value is described in terms of those same early years is selling you back something you already own. The years worth paying for are the ones after your factory coverage ends.
When I think it's a fair buy
When you intend to keep the vehicle well past 5 years or 100,000 km, when you drive high kilometres and will burn through the factory terms early, or when you want a fixed, transferable cost on a vehicle you will sell privately later. Those are real reasons and I will say so.
The question to ask at the desk
"What does this cover that I do not already have, and in which years?" Ask for the answer with years and kilometres stated out loud. A good product survives that question easily. Anything that gets vague is telling you something useful.
Honda Plus terms above are from honda.ca. Pre-owned Honda Plus brochure terms circulating separately describe purchase restrictions that I have not been able to confirm against honda.ca, so I have deliberately left them off this page rather than repeat them — confirm the current terms with the selling dealer for the exact plan you are offered.
What no warranty covers
Knowing this list prevents the most common disappointment I see at the service counter.
Wear items
Brake pads, wiper blades, tires, alignment. These are consumables and they are the owner's cost. It is not a loophole; it is how every manufacturer treats parts designed to be replaced on a schedule.
Damage, misuse, neglect
Collision damage, damage from misuse, and failures traceable to skipped maintenance sit outside warranty coverage. Keeping your service records is the single cheapest thing you can do to protect a future claim.
Read the booklet, not my summary
The warranty booklet comes with the vehicle, the exclusions section is short and written in plain language, and it is the document that actually governs. Ten minutes with it before you are sitting in the finance office is time extremely well spent.

Honda warranty in Canada — common questions
What is the warranty on a new Honda in Canada?
Three numbers. Comprehensive coverage runs 3 years / 60,000 km, whichever comes first. Powertrain coverage runs 5 years / 100,000 km. On a hybrid, the hybrid components are covered 8 years / 160,000 km. Those are Honda Canada's published terms — confirm the exact wording for your vehicle in the warranty booklet that comes with it, and note that the kilometre limit and the year limit are an "either/or", not an "and".
What is the difference between comprehensive and powertrain coverage?
Comprehensive is the broad one and the shorter one: 3 years / 60,000 km covering most of the vehicle. Powertrain is narrower but lasts longer at 5 years / 100,000 km, and it covers the expensive mechanical core — engine, transmission and drive system. The practical consequence is that in year four, a failed window motor is your cost and a failed transmission is not.
How long is the hybrid battery covered on a Honda in Canada?
Hybrid components are covered 8 years / 160,000 km, which is longer than the powertrain coverage on any Honda. Some Touring Hybrid trims carry a longer term of 10 years / 200,000 km where applicable, so confirm the figure for the exact trim rather than assuming. This is the question I get asked most about hybrids, and the answer is almost always reassuring: most people sell the car well before the coverage runs out.
What does Honda Certified Used coverage include?
Honda's Certified Used Vehicle program extends powertrain coverage to 7 years / 160,000 km measured from the vehicle's original in-service date — that is an extension of 2 years / 60,000 km beyond the factory powertrain term. It also includes a 100-point inspection, a 7-day / 1,000 km exchange privilege whichever comes first, and a CARFAX Canada vehicle history report. Do not confuse that 7 year / 160,000 km certified powertrain term with the 5 year / 100,000 km new-vehicle powertrain term or the 8 year / 160,000 km hybrid term.
Is a Honda Plus extended warranty worth buying?
Sometimes, and the honest answer depends on how long you intend to keep the car. Honda Plus plans run up to 8 years / 200,000 km in total, can be purchased for vehicles up to 5 model years old and under 100,000 km, carry a $0 deductible on a covered component breakdown, and are transferable at no cost under most conditions. Where I would push back is on buying coverage that overlaps what you already have. If you are three months into a new Honda, the first 3 years / 60,000 km are already covered comprehensively and the powertrain to 5 years / 100,000 km. Pay for the years beyond that, not the years you already own.
What does a Honda warranty not cover?
Wear items are normally the owner's cost, not warranty items — brake pads, wiper blades, tires and alignment are the ones that come up most. Damage from collision, misuse or lack of maintenance is also outside warranty. Rather than take my summary for it, read the exclusions section of the warranty booklet that comes with the vehicle; it is short, plain, and worth ten minutes before you are sitting in the finance office.
What should I ask before the finance office?
Ask what the product covers that your factory warranty does not already cover, and ask for that answer with the years and kilometres stated out loud. If the honest answer is "it starts after your existing coverage ends", that is a real product worth considering. If the answer is vague, or the overlap is not addressed, that tells you something. Text Henry Chen at 647-523-6878 with what you are being offered and he will tell you which parts duplicate coverage you already have. Service is available in English and Mandarin.
