reported that a proposed 50% U.S. tariff on Canadian-built cars, trucks and auto parts is dated January 1, 2027. Motor Illustrated, on September 2, wrote that Toyota and Honda together account for more than three-quarters of vehicles assembled in Canada, and that Barclays estimated Canadian-built vehicles were almost one-quarter of Honda’s 2025 U.S. volume. Honda’s Alliston plants build CR-V for the U.S. market as well as Civic and CR-V for Canada. · Motor Illustrated
What it means: This is an export-cost story, not a Vaughan invoice story. A duty on a Canadian-built CR-V crossing into the United States is paid on that crossing. A Civic Sedan or CR-V sold at Maple Honda is a Canadian retail deal. Honda Canada has not published a Civic or CR-V MSRP increase tied to the proposal. I will not invent one.
The plant fact still matters. Honda of Canada Manufacturing in Alliston builds Civic Sedan gas, Civic Hybrid, Civic Si, gas CR-V and CR-V Hybrid for the Canadian-market story. Those same plants also feed U.S. CR-V demand. If the January date holds, Honda has to decide how much U.S.-bound volume it can still justify from Alliston. That decision can show up here as tighter colour and trim mix, longer Civic Hybrid waits, or quieter incentive support if Honda starts holding units. It does not automatically show up as a higher honda.ca sticker this month. I walked the Alliston build story in more detail on the Alliston factory Civic and CR-V explainer.
I am not going to tell you Alliston is closing. Nobody announced that. Motor Illustrated said moving Canadian production elsewhere is not an overnight fix because U.S.-bound vehicles have their own rules and other plants may not have spare capacity. The floor conversation I will have through the fall is simpler: if you want this colour of Civic Hybrid or CR-V Hybrid on a written September quote, take the unit you can see. If you are comparing CR-V against RAV4, Toyota’s Cambridge plant sits in the same export-cost story. Walk that comparison on RAV4 vs CR-V in Vaughan with today’s Canadian figures, not a January headline.
My prediction: By December 5, 2026, Honda Canada will not publish a Civic Sedan or CR-V MSRP increase on honda.ca that it attributes to the proposed January 1, 2027 U.S. tariff. Canadian retail is not that duty. What I expect instead is quieter Alliston allocation if Honda starts protecting U.S.-bound mix. I will be wrong if honda.ca posts a Civic Sedan or CR-V sticker increase before December 5 that Honda Canada ties to that tariff.
If you're buying right now: Use the written September Honda Financial Services quote if the Civic or CR-V already fits. Do not wait for a January headline to rewrite this month’s rate, and do not panic-buy a trim you do not want. Confirm the Alliston window sticker on the VIN you actually sign.
Quick answers
Would a 50% U.S. tariff on Canadian-built cars raise Civic and CR-V stickers in Canada?
Not automatically. The proposed duty, dated January 1, 2027 in Motor Illustrated coverage, would apply to Canadian-built vehicles entering the United States. A Civic Sedan or CR-V sold in Vaughan is a Canadian retail transaction. Honda Canada has not published a Civic or CR-V MSRP increase tied to that proposal.
Which Hondas sold in Canada are built in Alliston?
For the Canadian-market story, Civic Sedan gas, Civic Hybrid, Civic Si, gas CR-V and CR-V Hybrid are Alliston-built. Honda of Canada Manufacturing lists Civic and CR-V production at its Alliston plants. Confirm the window sticker on the specific VIN.
Should I buy a Civic or CR-V before January 2027 because of the tariff talk?
Buy on the written September Honda Financial Services quote if the car already fits. Do not wait for a January headline to write this month’s rate. Do not rush a car you do not want because of a proposal that is not a signed Canadian price change. If you want an Alliston-built Civic or CR-V this fall, the useful document is still this month’s program.
Shopping an Alliston-built Civic or CR-V this month?
Send the trim and the quote you already have. I will tell you whether September’s program still beats waiting on a January headline that has not rewritten honda.ca.
