RAV4 Going All-Hybrid Raises the Bar for CR-V

Toyota is making hybrid the default compact SUV message in Canada. Honda shoppers should respond by comparing the right CR-V, not by treating every CR-V trim as the same answer.

Toyota Canada says the 2026 RAV4 lineup is 100 percent electrified, with hybrid-electric and plug-in hybrid choices, and that all 2026 RAV4 hybrid models sold in Canada are assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada. Honda Canada's 2026 CR-V specifications list the CR-V Hybrid trims at 204 combined horsepower and 247 lb-ft of combined torque; most CR-V Hybrid trims are listed at 6.4 L/100 km combined, while TrailSport Hybrid is listed at 6.7 L/100 km combined. What it means: Toyota has made the compact SUV pitch easier: every RAV4 starts from a hybrid story. That does not automatically make it the better choice, but it does change the sales-floor question. A shopper who walks in saying "RAV4 is hybrid now" should not be answered with generic CR-V talk. They should be shown CR-V Hybrid specifically.

Honda's useful advantage is choice. Some buyers still want the lower entry point and simpler gas CR-V. But for a Vaughan family comparing RAV4 and CR-V as daily all-weather SUVs, the real battle is hybrid-to-hybrid: how the vehicle drives, how the back seat and cargo area feel, what inventory is actually available, and whether the trade-in math works this month.

My prediction: Honda Canada will keep gas CR-V in the 2027 Canadian lineup instead of copying Toyota's hybrid-only RAV4 move immediately, while putting more showroom and incentive attention on CR-V Hybrid by December 31, 2026. Honda needs the gas model for price coverage, but the competitive conversation is clearly moving toward hybrid-first.

If you're buying right now: If you are cross-shopping CR-V and RAV4, compare CR-V Hybrid against RAV4 Hybrid first. Only bring gas CR-V back into the decision if the lower entry price matters more than fuel economy, torque, and long-term resale confidence.
