The news: Honda has become the world's first company to receive the highest possible 5-star rating in the products/services category of the FIA Road Safety Index. The recognition was presented at Monza during the Formula One Italian Grand Prix week in September 2026. Honda Global
What the Index actually measures: The FIA Road Safety Index is a governance tool. It assesses how a company plans, monitors, reports and embeds road safety across its operations and products. It is closer to an ESG-style audit than to NHTSA, IIHS or Transport Canada crash testing of a specific Civic, CR-V or Pilot.
Why five stars is new: The Index previously topped out at three stars. Honda was the first automaker to earn that top mark in February 2025, based on operations in Japan. For 2026 the FIA expanded the scale to five stars and added three modules: Planning, Monitoring of Safety Performance, and Safety Culture Management paired with Products/Services Coverage. Honda cleared all of them as the first company to do so.
The assessment covered 17 countries that account for more than 90% of Honda's global motorcycle and automobile sales. The countries listed by Honda are Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Türkiye, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, the Philippines and Brazil. Canada is not on that list. The rating still reflects the same global safety strategy, technologies and culture that reach Canadian vehicles built in Alliston and imported models sold here.
FIA auditors highlighted Honda's mid- to long-term safety planning with top-management involvement, global tracking of collision fatalities and injuries, monitoring by a global safety council, deployment of advanced safety technologies, and proactive disclosure of traffic-safety data. Honda's stated goals remain a 50% reduction in traffic-collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles (per 10,000 units sold) by 2030 versus 2020, and zero traffic-collision fatalities by 2050 under the slogan "Safety for Everyone."
My prediction: By December 14, 2026, at least one major Canadian or North American fleet or insurance buyer will cite Honda's FIA 5-star Road Safety Index rating in a public procurement or underwriting note — treating the governance score as a positive differentiator alongside model-level crash ratings.
If you're shopping a Honda in Vaughan: treat the FIA score as useful context about how the company runs safety, not as a substitute for the specific model's IIHS, NHTSA or Transport Canada results, recall history, or the safety equipment on the VIN in front of you.
Model-level crash scores and real-world features still matter most on the lot. Honda's recent IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ results for several 2026 models remain the practical numbers for Canadian shoppers. The FIA rating simply confirms the company is measuring and managing safety at a global systems level that no other automaker has yet matched under the expanded five-star framework.
Quick answers
Is the FIA 5-star rating a crash-test score for Honda models?
No. The FIA Road Safety Index rates a company's global safety governance, planning, monitoring and culture across its products and services. It is not the same as NHTSA, IIHS or Transport Canada crash-test ratings for a specific Civic, CR-V or Pilot.
Does the 5-star FIA rating apply to Canada?
Canada is not listed among the 17 countries in Honda's assessed scope. The assessment covered more than 90% of Honda's global motorcycle and automobile sales volume. The rating still reflects Honda's worldwide safety strategy and technologies that reach Canadian vehicles.
What did Honda have to clear to earn five stars?
The FIA expanded the Index from a three-star maximum to five stars. The new 4- and 5-star levels add modules for Planning, Monitoring of Safety Performance, and Safety Culture Management plus Products/Services Coverage. Honda was the first company to clear them.
Should this change how I choose between a 2026 Honda and a competitor?
Use it as supporting context. Prioritize the actual model's Canadian-market safety ratings, the specific safety equipment on the window sticker, and the real price, rate and delivery timing of the vehicle you're considering.
Want the safety equipment list for the exact Honda you're considering?
Send me the model, trim and model year. I can walk through the Canadian-market features and how they compare to what is actually on the VIN.
