What happened
- MiltonNow reported that a Dodge Durango was stolen from the Cineplex Cinemas Milton parking lot on Maple Avenue on Tuesday, August 25.
- Police said the theft happened sometime between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.
- At the time of the report, the SUV had not been recovered and no suspect description was available.

The incident was reported by FM101 MiltonNow, citing Halton Regional Police. Anyone with information was directed to Halton Police or Crime Stoppers.
A busy parking lot can still give thieves time
Most of us feel more comfortable leaving a vehicle at a movie theatre, shopping centre or restaurant because there are lights, people and other cars around. But a two-hour movie is also a predictable window of time when the owner is unlikely to return to the vehicle.
That does not mean drivers should become paranoid about every public parking lot. It does mean that locking the doors should be the first layer, not the only layer.
Important: This was a Dodge Durango theft. It is not evidence that Honda vehicles are more or less likely to be stolen. The lesson is about parking habits and layered security across brands.
What Halton Police recommends
Halton Regional Police publishes vehicle-theft prevention guidance for local drivers. Their recommendations include using a locked garage when possible, protecting the onboard diagnostic port, using a steering-wheel lock, adding a tracking device, keeping key fobs protected when they are not in use, and keeping vehicles locked and valuables out of sight.
- Lock the vehicle every time. It sounds basic because it is, but it is still the foundation.
- Add a visible physical deterrent. A steering-wheel lock creates another obstacle and may encourage a thief to move on.
- Protect electronic access. For vehicles where reprogramming is a concern, Halton Police recommends considering an OBD-port blocker.
- Use a separate tracker. A hidden aftermarket GPS or other tracking device may improve the chance of locating the vehicle after a theft.
- Choose the parking spot deliberately. Use well-lit, visible areas where possible and do not leave valuables or identifying documents in the vehicle.

The habit I would change after reading this story
If I am parking for dinner, a movie or a long appointment, I would think about the car the same way I think about it overnight: I know roughly how long I will be away, and so could someone watching the parking lot.
Before walking away, take ten seconds. Confirm the vehicle is locked. Do not leave the keys, wallet, ownership documents or anything valuable visible inside. If you use a steering-wheel lock, use it consistently rather than only at home. If you have a tracker, make sure its battery or subscription is still active.
None of those steps makes a vehicle impossible to steal. The goal is to add friction, improve the chance of recovery and avoid making your vehicle the easiest option in the row.
If your vehicle is stolen
Halton Police advises owners to report a stolen vehicle to police and to keep important identifying information recorded somewhere safe, including the year, make, model, colour, licence plate and VIN. If you witness a crime in progress or a dangerous situation, call 911.
