Honda Roadside Assistance in Ontario 2026: 3-Year Complimentary Coverage + GTA Breakdown Guide
Every new Honda sold in Canada comes with 3 years of complimentary Honda Roadside Assistance (HRA) from the date the vehicle was first registered. No cost, no deductible, 24 hours a day / 7 days a week / 365 days a year. HRA covers emergency towing (typically to the nearest Honda dealer, often within 100 km), battery boosts, flat tire changes, lockout assistance, fuel delivery (5L of gas or 30 min of EV charging), and accident tows. Phone: 1-800-465-PLUS (7587). Online: honda.roadsideaid.com. Here is what every GTA Honda owner needs to know about HRA, what to do in the first 10 minutes of a highway breakdown, and how it compares to CAA.
1. The complimentary 3-year HRA program
Honda Canada includes complimentary Honda Roadside Assistance (HRA) with every new Honda sold or leased in Canada. The program is automatic — you do not need to sign up or register. Coverage begins on the date the vehicle is first registered and runs for 3 years.
How to confirm you have HRA
- Check your original purchase or lease paperwork — HRA coverage is listed in the warranty section
- Look for the HRA wallet card in your glove box (small plastic card with 1-800-465-7587)
- Call HRA at 1-800-465-7587 with your VIN to verify coverage
- Check the HondaLink app if your Honda has it (2022+ models with HondaLink connected by OnStar)
Coverage area
HRA covers all of Canada (provinces and territories) and the continental United States, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. International travel (Mexico, Caribbean, Europe) is NOT covered by HRA — you need separate travel insurance or a different roadside assistance plan for those trips.
2. The 9 services HRA covers
The 3-year complimentary HRA covers 9 emergency services:
| Service | What's covered | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Towing (mechanical breakdown) | Tow to nearest authorized Honda dealer | Often 100 km preferred-dealer radius; beyond that, customer may pay the difference |
| 2. Towing (accident) | Tow to nearest Honda dealer or body shop of your choice | Coordinate with your insurance (DCPD) |
| 3. Battery boost (12V) | Jump-start a dead 12V battery | Does not cover battery replacement |
| 4. Flat tire change | Install your spare tire | Requires a usable spare in the vehicle; does not cover tire repair or replacement |
| 5. Lockout assistance | Non-destructive vehicle unlock | Does not cover key replacement, key programming, or re-keying |
| 6. Fuel delivery (gas models) | Up to 5L of regular unleaded gasoline | Does not cover diesel or premium; not for regular fuel purchases |
| 7. EV charging (Prologue) | Up to 30 min of Level 2 charging at a nearby public charger | Does not cover fast-charging costs |
| 8. Trip interruption coverage | Reimbursement for hotel, meals, rental car if breakdown is 100+ km from home | Available on HRA Plus plan (not basic HRA) |
| 9. Travel planning and concierge | Route planning, hotel reservations, restaurant recommendations | Available on HRA Plus plan (not basic HRA) |
3. The 3 things HRA does NOT cover
HRA covers emergency roadside services but does NOT cover:
- Collision repair. If your Honda is damaged in a collision, HRA covers the tow but the repair goes through your DCPD or collision insurance. HRA does not pay for body work, paint, or mechanical repair resulting from a collision.
- Key replacement. If you lose your keys or break a key in the ignition, HRA covers lockout assistance (non-destructive unlock) but does NOT pay for a new key. New Honda keys cost $200-$400 at a dealer (includes programming). Some car insurance policies cover key replacement under comprehensive coverage.
- Tire replacement or repair. If your tire is damaged beyond repair (sidewall damage, large puncture, blowout), HRA tows you to a tire shop or Honda dealer but does not pay for the new tire. Tire road hazard warranties are a separate product, available as an optional add-on through Honda dealers.
What HRA also does not cover:
- Regular maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, etc.) — that's Honda Care / Honda dealer service
- Mechanical breakdown repair — that's the standard 3-year / 60,000 km warranty or Honda Care extended warranty
- Damage to your vehicle from a collision — that's insurance (DCPD)
- Damage to other vehicles or property — that's insurance (third-party liability)
- Towing to a non-Honda shop (in most cases; some plans allow up to 100 km to non-Honda)
4. How to call HRA
Three ways to reach Honda Roadside Assistance:
Phone (fastest, recommended for emergencies)
Call 1-800-465-PLUS (7587). The line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Have your VIN ready. The call takes 2-5 minutes. The dispatcher will:
- Verify your coverage (VIN-based)
- Locate your position (GPS from your phone or verbal directions)
- Confirm the nature of the emergency (battery, flat, lockout, fuel, mechanical)
- Dispatch the appropriate service provider (tow truck, battery tech, locksmith, fuel delivery)
- Provide an estimated arrival time (ETA) for the service provider
Online
Submit a service request at honda.roadsideaid.com. Useful when you have WiFi but not great cell signal. The online form takes 5-10 minutes to complete. Best for non-emergency situations (locked out at home, dead battery in your driveway, flat tire in a parking lot).
HondaLink app (2022+ models)
If your Honda has HondaLink connected by OnStar (most 2022+ models), you can request roadside assistance directly from the in-vehicle touchscreen. Tap the SOS button or the HondaLink menu, select Roadside Assistance, and the call is placed hands-free through your Honda's speakers. The dispatcher automatically receives your GPS location from the vehicle.
5. What to do in the first 10 minutes of a GTA highway breakdown
The first 10 minutes after a highway breakdown are the most dangerous. Here is the priority sequence:
Minutes 0-1: Safety first
- Turn on your hazard lights immediately
- Try to steer the vehicle to the right shoulder, away from traffic
- If the vehicle is unsafe to drive (smoke, fluid leak, engine seized, accident damage), stop where you are and exit the vehicle on the side AWAY from traffic
- Get yourself and all passengers to a safe location, ideally behind the highway barrier
- Exit the vehicle ONLY if you can safely get to a barrier or guardrail
Minutes 1-3: Visibility
- Place reflective triangles or flares 30 metres behind the vehicle if you have them
- If it is dark, foggy, or raining, keep your hazard lights on and consider turning on your interior dome light (helps other drivers see you)
- Wear bright or reflective clothing if you have it (many safety kits include a reflective vest)
Minutes 3-5: Call for help
- If you are in immediate danger (vehicle on fire, in a high-speed traffic lane, occupant injured), call 911 FIRST
- For a non-emergency breakdown, call HRA at 1-800-465-7587
- Provide your location (highway, direction, nearest exit or km marker), vehicle description (make, model, colour), and nature of the emergency
- Stay on the line with the dispatcher until they confirm a tow truck is dispatched
Minutes 5-10: Stay or go
- Stay with the vehicle if it is safe to do so. The vehicle provides shelter and is more visible than a person on foot
- Lock the doors and roll up the windows for security
- Do not accept help from strangers. Wait for the official tow truck (HRA will tell you the driver name and truck number)
- If you must walk to get help (vehicle completely dead, no cell service), walk on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic so you can see approaching vehicles
6. When to call 911 vs HRA vs non-emergency police
Three different numbers, three different purposes:
Call 911 for immediate emergencies
- Vehicle on fire
- Collision with injury or death
- Vehicle in a high-speed traffic lane (cannot reach shoulder)
- Occupant injured or having a medical emergency
- Criminal act (road rage, impaired driver, hit-and-run in progress)
- Vehicle disabled on a bridge or in a tunnel
Call HRA (1-800-465-7587) for non-emergency breakdowns
- Battery dead (vehicle safely off the road)
- Flat tire (vehicle safely off the road)
- Out of fuel (vehicle safely off the road)
- Locked out (vehicle safely parked)
- Mechanical breakdown (engine, transmission, electrical)
- Vehicle disabled but safely on the shoulder
Call non-emergency police for traffic-related situations that are not emergencies
- OPP non-emergency: 1-888-310-1122 (Ontario Provincial Police)
- Toronto Police non-emergency: 416-808-2222
- York Region Police non-emergency: 1-866-876-5423
- Peel Regional Police non-emergency: 905-453-2121
- Halton Regional Police non-emergency: 905-825-4777
- Durham Regional Police non-emergency: 905-579-1520
For non-emergency breakdowns where the vehicle is safe but you need police presence (e.g., aggressive driver, suspicious person near your disabled vehicle), call the local police non-emergency line.
7. CAA as a complement to HRA
CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) is a popular alternative or complement to HRA. Here is how they compare:
| Feature | Honda Roadside Assistance (HRA) | CAA |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free for 3 years, then $100-$300/year | $119-$211/year (South Central Ontario) |
| Covers | The specific Honda | Any vehicle (car you drive, rental, carpool) |
| Coverage area | Canada + continental US | Canada + US + some international |
| Service | Honda-dealer network + authorized tow operators | CAA-approved tow network |
| Tow distance | Often 100 km to Honda dealer | Varies by membership level (10-200 km) |
| Trip planning | HRA Plus only | Included in all levels |
| Travel agency | No | Yes (discounts on hotels, insurance, attractions) |
| Bike / RV coverage | No (Honda vehicles only) | Yes (add-on for bike, RV, motorcycle) |
Most GTA Honda owners use BOTH HRA (for the Honda) and CAA (for everything else). The total cost is $119-$211/year (CAA) + $0 (3-year complimentary HRA) = $119-$211/year. After the 3-year complimentary HRA expires, you can renew HRA for $100-$300/year and keep CAA. The dual coverage gives you flexibility for rentals, carpool, and any future vehicle you might add to the household.
8. Honda Prologue EV breakdowns — what's different
The 2024-2026 Honda Prologue EV has some EV-specific breakdown considerations that gas-powered Hondas do not have:
Running out of charge
If the Prologue runs out of charge on the road, HRA covers up to 30 minutes of Level 2 charging at a nearby public charger. This is enough to add ~30-50 km of range — enough to reach a DC fast charger. HRA does not pay for the charging cost (typically $0.40-$0.65/kWh at public DC fast chargers per the Cycle 95 charging guide).
12V battery
The Prologue has two batteries: a high-voltage traction battery (85 kWh) and a 12V auxiliary battery. If the 12V battery is dead, the vehicle cannot start even if the traction battery is fully charged. HRA covers 12V boost for the Prologue as it does for gas Hondas.
Accidents with high-voltage system damage
If the Prologue is involved in a collision that triggers the airbags, the high-voltage system is automatically shut down. However, the vehicle must still be transported on a flatbed tow truck (not rolled or towed with two wheels on the ground) to avoid damage to the battery and electric motors. HRA dispatches a flatbed tow for EV accidents. Wait times may be 30-60 minutes longer than a standard tow because flatbed trucks are less common than wheel-lift trucks.
Tire changes
The Prologue typically does NOT come with a spare tire — it comes with a tire sealant and inflator kit stored in the cargo area. HRA covers tire sealant application but not tire replacement. If the tire is damaged beyond repair (sidewall blowout, large puncture), HRA tows the Prologue to a Honda dealer or Honda-certified EV service centre.
Where to tow
For mechanical or electrical issues, HRA tows the Prologue to a Honda dealer with EV-certified technicians. Not all Honda dealers are EV-certified — Maple Honda in Vaughan has Prologue-certified service technicians. For high-voltage battery issues, the Prologue may need to be towed to a Honda dealer with specialized battery diagnostic equipment.
9. Cost of a tow without HRA / CAA
If you do not have HRA (expired) or CAA, what does a tow cost out of pocket in the GTA in 2026?
| Service | Base fee | Per km after hookup | Example 30 km tow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light-duty tow (car / SUV) | $75-$125 | $3-$5 | $165-$275 |
| Medium-duty tow (pickup / van) | $100-$150 | $4-$6 | $220-$330 |
| Flatbed tow (Prologue EV / low vehicle) | $150-$200 | $5-$8 | $300-$440 |
| Lockout service | $75-$150 | n/a | $75-$150 |
| Battery boost (private company) | $75-$150 | n/a | $75-$150 |
| Tire change (no spare) | $100-$200 | n/a | $100-$200 |
| Fuel delivery | $75-$150 + fuel cost | n/a | $80-$160 |
A single Highway 400 tow from Barrie to a Vaughan Honda dealer (about 100 km) without HRA could cost $400-$600. CAA membership pays for itself after a single tow.
10. How to renew HRA before it expires
Don't wait until your HRA expires to renew — a 30-day coverage gap can leave you stranded without coverage. Here's the renewal process:
- About 60 days before your 3-year HRA expires, Honda will send you a renewal notice by mail or email
- Call any authorized Honda dealer to renew HRA (basic or Plus plan)
- Pay the renewal fee (basic $100-$150/year, Plus $200-$300/year)
- Coverage continues from the expiry date of your old plan with no gap
You can also renew HRA at the time of any Honda service appointment — just ask your service advisor. Many Honda dealers offer bundle discounts when you renew HRA + Honda Care extended warranty together.
11. Henry's take — what I see at the dealer
In my experience at Maple Honda, the HRA program is one of the most underused Honda benefits. Many owners do not know they have it, or do not know how to use it. The most common situation is the customer who calls the dealer service department from the side of the 400 because they did not know HRA is a separate number from the dealer.
My advice for every new Honda owner at delivery:
- Save the HRA number in your phone. 1-800-465-7587. Also save honda.roadsideaid.com as a bookmark. Better yet, program both into your Honda's head unit via HondaLink.
- Keep the HRA wallet card in your glove box. It has the number, your VIN, and the expiry date. Helpful if you are borrowing the car or lending it to someone.
- Verify coverage at every service appointment. The service advisor can pull up your HRA status and tell you when it expires. If you are approaching expiry, renew at the same appointment.
- Get CAA as a complement. HRA covers the Honda. CAA covers everything else — rental cars, carpool, future vehicles. Most of my service customers have both.
- Consider Honda Care extended warranty for older Hondas. HRA expires at 3 years. Honda Care extended warranty covers mechanical breakdown for 5-8 years. Together they give you comprehensive coverage from purchase through 8 years / 200,000 km.
One more thing: the HRA program is a major reason to buy a new Honda from a Honda dealer (not a private seller or non-Honda dealer). The 3-year complimentary HRA is included with the vehicle, but it requires dealer-network support. Private sellers and non-Honda dealers cannot register you for HRA. Buy from a Honda dealer, get the HRA welcome kit, and save the number.
Frequently asked questions
Is Honda Roadside Assistance free in Canada?
Yes. Every new Honda purchased or leased in Canada comes with complimentary Honda Roadside Assistance (HRA) for 3 years from the date the vehicle was first registered. There is no cost to the owner for the 3-year complimentary coverage. After 3 years, you can renew the coverage through your Honda dealer (typically $100-$300 per year) or use an alternative like CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) which costs $100-$180 per year for basic membership.
How long is Honda Roadside Assistance good for?
Honda Roadside Assistance (HRA) is complimentary for 3 years from the date the vehicle was first registered, per Honda Canada's standard program. There is no mileage limit during the 3-year period. If you buy a 2026 Honda in July 2026, your complimentary HRA expires in July 2029. You can renew HRA through any authorized Honda dealer before or after expiry - typical cost is $100-$300 per year depending on the plan level. Honda Care extended warranty is a separate product that covers mechanical breakdown beyond the standard 3-year/60,000 km warranty - HRA is roadside, Honda Care is mechanical.
What is Honda Canada's roadside assistance phone number?
Honda Canada Roadside Assistance phone number: 1-800-465-PLUS (7587). The line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You can also submit a service request or claim online at honda.roadsideaid.com. For non-emergency customer service questions (not roadside emergencies), call Honda Customer Relations at 1-888-9-HONDA-9 (1-888-946-6329), Monday-Friday 8 AM to 7:30 PM EST.
Does Honda Roadside Assistance cover towing?
Yes. HRA covers towing to the nearest authorized Honda dealership for mechanical breakdown. In many cases, Honda's policy specifies a 100 km preferred-dealer tow - meaning if you break down within 100 km of an authorized Honda dealer, the tow is free. If you are more than 100 km from the nearest dealer, you may need to pay the difference or have the vehicle towed to a closer non-Honda shop. For accidents (collision-related tows), HRA covers towing but you may need to coordinate with your insurance company as well. For the Honda Prologue EV, HRA covers towing to the nearest Honda dealer or Honda-certified EV service centre.
Does Honda Roadside Assistance cover flat tires?
Yes. HRA covers flat tire changes if you have a usable spare tire in the vehicle. The technician will install your spare. HRA does NOT cover: tire repair (patching a punctured tire), tire replacement (if the tire is damaged beyond repair), or roadside tire delivery. If you do not have a spare (many newer Hondas come with a tire sealant and inflator kit instead of a spare), HRA will dispatch a tow to the nearest tire shop or Honda dealer. Tire road hazard damage is NOT covered under HRA - it requires a separate tire road hazard warranty, which Honda offers as an optional add-on.
Does Honda Roadside Assistance cover lockouts?
Yes. HRA covers lockout assistance 24/7. The technician will attempt to unlock your vehicle using non-destructive methods (slim jim, long-reach tool, etc.). If the technician cannot unlock the vehicle without damage (e.g., the keys are inside but all doors are deadlocked), HRA will arrange a tow to the nearest Honda dealer or locksmith. HRA does NOT cover: replacement of lost keys, key programming (typically $200-$400 at a dealer), or re-keying the vehicle. For key replacement, you pay out of pocket or claim through your car insurance (comprehensive coverage sometimes includes key replacement).
Does Honda Roadside Assistance cover fuel delivery?
Yes for gas-powered Hondas. HRA delivers up to 5 litres of regular unleaded gasoline (or enough fuel to reach the nearest gas station, typically 5-10 km of driving) for free. The technician will not deliver diesel (Honda does not sell a diesel vehicle in Canada) or premium gasoline (you can use regular in any modern Honda engine). For the Honda Prologue EV, HRA delivers up to 30 minutes of Level 2 charging at a nearby public charger - this is for the rare case of running out of charge in a non-emergency situation. HRA does NOT cover: regular fuel purchases, electric vehicle fast-charging costs, or running out of fuel due to a fuel gauge malfunction.
Does Honda Roadside Assistance cover accidents?
HRA covers towing for accidents (collision, hit-and-run, single-vehicle crash). The vehicle is towed to the nearest authorized Honda dealer or a body shop of your choice. HRA coordinates with your insurance company but does not pay for the collision repair itself - that goes through your DCPD or collision coverage. HRA does NOT cover: medical expenses (call 911), accident reporting (call police), or damage to your vehicle (go through insurance). For the Honda Prologue EV involved in a collision, the high-voltage system is automatically disabled by the airbag deployment, but the vehicle must still be towed on a flatbed (not rolled) - HRA dispatches a flatbed tow truck for EV accidents.
Does Honda Roadside Assistance cover a dead battery?
Yes. HRA covers battery boost service (jump-start) for a dead 12V battery. The technician will boost the battery and may test it briefly. If the battery is dead and needs replacement, HRA does not pay for the new battery - that is an out-of-pocket cost ($200-$400 for a Honda OEM battery installed). For the Honda Prologue EV, the 12V battery is separate from the high-voltage traction battery; a dead 12V battery can prevent the vehicle from starting even with a fully charged traction battery. HRA covers 12V boost for the Prologue as well.
What if I bought a used Honda - is HRA still active?
It depends on the age of the vehicle. HRA coverage is tied to the original in-service date (when the vehicle was first registered), not the current ownership. If you bought a 2024 Honda in 2026, the 3-year HRA may still be active (until the original 2027 expiry). You can verify coverage by calling 1-800-465-7587 with the VIN. If HRA has expired on the used Honda, you can purchase a new HRA plan through any Honda dealer (typically $100-$300 per year) or use CAA. Some certified pre-owned (CPO) Hondas from Honda dealers come with a fresh HRA plan starting from the CPO sale date - ask your dealer for details.
Can I renew Honda Roadside Assistance after it expires?
Yes. HRA can be renewed through any authorized Honda dealer. Plans are typically sold in 1-year, 2-year, or 3-year terms. Cost depends on the plan level: basic HRA (towing + battery boost + flat tire + lockout + fuel) is $100-$150 per year. Premium HRA Plus (adds trip interruption coverage, travel planning, concierge) is $200-$300 per year. You can also get HRA bundled with Honda Care extended warranty for a discount. Renew before your 3-year complimentary HRA expires to avoid a coverage gap.
Is CAA better than Honda Roadside Assistance?
It depends on your needs. CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) covers any vehicle you drive or ride in, including rental cars, carpool, and other people's vehicles. HRA is tied to the specific Honda. If you only drive your Honda, HRA is sufficient. If you regularly drive rental cars, borrow cars, or have multiple vehicles in the household, CAA may be more flexible. CAA membership also includes travel agency services, insurance discounts, and hotel discounts. Cost: CAA South Central Ontario basic membership is $119/year, Plus is $167/year, Premier is $211/year. HRA is complimentary for 3 years then $100-$300/year to renew. Most Honda owners use both - HRA for the Honda, CAA for everything else.
What about Honda Prologue EV breakdowns?
Honda Prologue EV breakdowns have some EV-specific considerations. Running out of charge: HRA delivers up to 30 minutes of Level 2 charging at a nearby public charger (covered). Mechanical breakdown: HRA covers towing to the nearest Honda dealer or Honda-certified EV service centre. Accident with high-voltage system damage: HRA dispatches a flatbed tow truck (the Prologue must be transported on a flatbed, not rolled, due to the battery). Tire change: HRA covers it but the Prologue may not come with a spare - check your cargo area for the tire sealant and inflator kit. 12V battery: HRA covers 12V boost. The Prologue is too new to have long-term reliability data, but early reports suggest the Ultium platform is reliable for the first 100,000 km.
How long is the tow truck wait time in the GTA?
Tow truck wait times in the GTA vary by time of day, weather, and location. Typical HRA response times in the GTA in 2026: 30-60 minutes during business hours (8 AM - 6 PM, Monday-Friday), 60-90 minutes during evenings and weekends, 90-180 minutes during severe weather (snowstorms, ice storms, extreme cold) and on long weekends. Highway 400-series breakdowns during rush hour can take 90+ minutes because the tow truck has to navigate traffic. Off-peak rural breakdowns (Highway 400 north of Barrie) can take 60-120 minutes because the tow truck is dispatched from a farther location. For the Honda Prologue, the flatbed tow requirement can add 30-60 minutes to the wait if a flatbed is not immediately available.
What if my Honda breaks down at night?
HRA is available 24/7/365, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The phone line is staffed at all hours. Response times at night are similar to or faster than weekend response times because there is less traffic on the road for the tow truck. Safety tip: if you break down on a highway at night, stay in your vehicle with the hazard lights on, lock the doors, and call 911 first if you are in immediate danger (e.g., vehicle on fire, in a high-speed traffic lane). For a simple breakdown (battery / flat tire / out of fuel), stay in or near the vehicle with the hazard lights on, wear a reflective vest if you have one, and call HRA at 1-800-465-7587.
Does Honda Roadside Assistance cover out-of-province trips?
Yes. HRA covers Canada and the continental United States, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. You can break down anywhere in Canada from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, BC and HRA will dispatch a tow truck. For US trips, HRA covers all 50 states and Puerto Rico. For international travel (Mexico, Caribbean, Europe), HRA does NOT apply - you need separate travel insurance or a different roadside assistance plan. For Quebec trips from Ontario, HRA applies the same way, but be aware that Quebec uses a different insurance system (SAAQ) and tow operators may be slower in rural Quebec.
