Every few months I have the same conversation on the lot: a buyer walks in wanting "a small SUV" — something taller than a sedan, easier to load than a hatchback, with real ground clearance for the odd cottage road or snowy driveway. They look at the CR-V, then the HR-V, and ask which is the right size. Most of the time, the answer is the HR-V, and most of the time the right trim is the LX. Here is the case for the 2027 HR-V LX, what is new this year, and where the Sport and EX-L trims earn their step-ups.
What is new for 2027
The 2027 HR-V is a styling refresh of the second-generation HR-V that launched for 2023. The mechanical package is unchanged: same 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder producing 158 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 138 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm, paired with a continuously variable transmission. NRCan rates the front-wheel-drive version at 8.3 L/100 km combined and the Real Time AWD version at 8.7 L/100 km combined on regular-grade fuel. The exterior gets a more CR-V-like front end, redesigned alloy wheels, fresh LED signatures, and a few new colour options. Inside, the steering wheel, the centre console, and the infotainment presentation are updated.
The bigger story is that every trim now comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 9-inch colour touchscreen, a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster, push-button start, and the full Honda Sensing safety suite — forward collision warning, collision mitigation braking, lane keeping assist, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise with low-speed follow, traffic sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and auto high-beam headlights. None of those are add-ons for 2027.
Why the LX is the right trim to start in
The LX is the entry point in the HR-V lineup and the trim I recommend most first-time SUV buyers start with. It comes with cloth seats, the manual-adjust driver's seat, the smaller 17-inch alloy wheels, the 4-speaker 180-watt audio system, and Real Time AWD available as a $2,000-ish option over FWD. What it does not have versus the Sport and EX-L trims: heated front seats, blind spot information with cross traffic monitor, the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, the power moonroof, the smart entry with walk-away auto lock, dual-zone climate control, and leather-trimmed seating.
For most first-time SUV buyers, none of those are dealbreakers. Heated seats matter in Vaughan winters — if that is you, step up to the Sport. If you do not have a long highway commute and you do not park in tight city spots every day, blind spot information is a nice-to-have but not a must-have. The LX gives you the HR-V's mechanical fundamentals, the full Honda Sensing safety suite, and the modern infotainment — at the lowest MSRP in the lineup.
What the LX is great at
The HR-V's strongest argument is its packaging. The 2027 HR-V is shorter than a CR-V (it sits on a 104.5-inch wheelbase versus the CR-V's 106.3) but uses the space well — the Magic Seat second-row design lets you fold the seats up to the seatbacks for a tall cargo area, or fold them flat for a long load floor. Behind the second row, you get 24.4 cubic feet (about 691 L) of cargo space, which expands to 55.1 cubic feet (about 1,560 L) with the seats folded. For a single person or a couple, that is more than enough cargo room for a Costco run, two sets of golf clubs, or a long weekend's worth of luggage.
Passenger room is generous. The HR-V's tall roof and upright greenhouse give it more rear headroom than many compact crossovers, and the rear legroom at 37.7 inches is enough for two adults on a longer drive. The 2027 LX also gets a longer wheelbase than the first-generation HR-V, which makes the back seat more usable for families with kids in car seats.

What it costs and where it is built
The 2027 HR-V LX is the lowest-MSRP trim in the lineup, with the FWD version starting in the low-$30,000s CAD and the AWD version typically around $2,000 above that. Honda has not dramatically repriced the HR-V for 2027 versus 2026 — the changes are mechanical refinements and styling, not a price hike.
It is worth being honest about build origin: the 2027 HR-V is sourced from Honda's Celaya plant in Mexico, not from Honda of Canada Manufacturing in Alliston. For an Ontario buyer who specifically wants a Honda built in Canada, the Civic and the CR-V are still the only two nameplates built at Alliston. The HR-V has been sourced from Mexico for several model years and that is not changing for 2027.
Three Vaughan buyers, three HR-V trims
- LX (FWD or AWD): the first-time SUV buyer, the downsizing empty-nester, the commuter who wants Honda reliability and the full safety suite at the lowest price.
- Sport (AWD): the buyer who wants heated seats, blind spot information, the blacked-out 18-inch wheels, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel. The trim most Vaughan HR-V shoppers end up in.
- EX-L (AWD): the buyer who wants leather seating, dual-zone climate, the power moonroof, and the most equipment. The trim for the HR-V buyer who wants everything short of a CR-V.
When the HR-V is not the right answer
The HR-V is the right small SUV for most buyers, but it is not the right answer for everyone. If you regularly carry four adults, you will feel the rear seat at highway speeds and you will want the extra legroom of a CR-V. If you regularly tow a trailer, the HR-V is officially not rated for towing — Honda Canada does not recommend towing with an HR-V. If you live on a cottage road with serious unplowed snow, the Real Time AWD HR-V handles it better than the FWD, but the CR-V Hybrid with its higher ground clearance is the more capable winter vehicle.
For the typical Maple Honda buyer doing the typical Vaughan commute, parking in a city garage, and driving a mix of highway and city, the HR-V LX is the right small SUV at the right price. If that is not quite your use case, the CR-V or the Passport are waiting.
The bottom line
The 2027 HR-V LX is the small SUV most first-time SUV buyers actually need. It is shorter than a CR-V, easier to park, more efficient, and cheaper — while keeping the full Honda Sensing safety suite, the modern infotainment, and the cargo packaging that has made the HR-V Honda's strongest small-SUV argument since the second generation launched. If you are shopping for a small SUV this summer, drive an HR-V LX before you decide on anything bigger. Henry can set up that test drive on the same afternoon.
