Recalls are issued by the vehicle manufacturer, regulated federally by Transport Canada. OMVIC's role is to remind buyers that recalls are not optional, that a dealer can legally sell a vehicle with an open recall, and that the responsibility to verify and register falls partly on the buyer.
If you buy a used Honda from us or anyone else, check Transport Canada's recall database by VIN before delivery. If a recall is open, ask the dealer whether the repair has been scheduled or completed. If you buy from a private seller, the responsibility to register with Honda for future recall notices is entirely yours.
The two databases that matter
Transport Canada's Road Safety Database is the official Canadian source. Search by VIN and you'll see every recall Transport Canada has on file for that vehicle — past and present. The list updates as new recalls are issued.
Honda Canada's owner site and the American NHTSA database also list recalls. Some US-only recalls don't apply to Canadian-market Hondas, and some Canadian recalls don't appear in US databases. Always cross-check Transport Canada.
What OMVIC expects buyers to do
- Before buying a used vehicle, search Transport Canada's recall database using the VIN
- Ask the dealer whether all open recalls have been performed
- If a recall is open, confirm in writing that it will be completed before delivery, or shortly after
- After purchase, register with Honda Canada so you receive future recall notices
- If you suspect a safety defect on a Honda you already own, file a Defect Complaint Form with Transport Canada or call 1-800-333-0510

How Honda handles recall repairs
Recall repairs are performed at Honda dealerships at no cost to the owner, regardless of warranty status. The work is paid for by Honda Canada. A typical recall repair takes a few hours to a day, depending on the work involved.
If you buy a Certified Pre-Owned Honda from us and there's an open recall, we complete the repair before delivery whenever possible. If the parts aren't immediately available, we document the open recall on the bill of sale and schedule the repair as soon as parts land.
Why this matters more on a used Honda than a new one
A new Honda is delivered recall-clean — the factory and the dealer have already addressed every recall on that specific VIN. The recall question becomes relevant only if a new recall is issued between the time the car was built and the time you take delivery, which is rare.
A used Honda may have been sold multiple times, traded through auctions, and missed a recall mailing or two. The original owner received the recall notice; if the ownership was never updated with Honda Canada, you may not. That's why OMVIC's guidance to register with the manufacturer after purchase is non-negotiable for any used vehicle.
Frequently asked, Vaughan edition
Can a dealer sell me a Honda with an open recall?
Yes. OMVIC confirms that dealers and private sellers can legally sell a vehicle with an outstanding recall. The repair is the manufacturer's responsibility, not the dealer's; the dealer has no obligation to perform it before sale unless it's been negotiated in the contract.
Are recall repairs free?
Yes, recall repairs are paid for by Honda Canada at any authorized Honda dealer. You don't pay out of pocket for parts or labour on a recall repair.
How do I register with Honda Canada after buying a used Honda?
Contact Honda Canada customer service or visit any Honda dealer service department with your VIN. They'll update the ownership record so you receive any future recall notices by mail and email.
