Ontario licence plate renewal and ownership transfer for Honda buyers

Why this page exists

Every Honda owner in Ontario eventually deals with ServiceOntario for licence plate renewal or vehicle ownership transfer. Most owners don't realize until the renewal sticker arrives in the mail, or until they buy a new Honda from Henry and need to hand over their old plates. Here's the plain-English version of the Ontario process for both, sourced directly from ontario.ca and ServiceOntario.

This page does not introduce any Honda-specific facts beyond what's already verified in HONDA_CANADA_FACTS.json. All compliance / ServiceOntario / HST content is from public Ontario government sources - OMVIC for dealer rules, ServiceOntario for plate and ownership processes, Ontario Ministry of Finance for HST rules, CRA for private-sale HST guidance.

Licence plate renewal: how it works in Ontario

Ontario moved away from licence plate sticker renewal in 2024. As of the current system:

• No sticker is mailed to you. Your licence plate does not have an expiry sticker for most passenger vehicles (Ontario discontinued the sticker system in March 2024).
• You don't need to renew online. Your plate is valid until you transfer it (sell the car), return it (scrap the car), or until the plate physically expires (which is rare for typical passenger plates issued in the last decade).
• What you do still need to do: validate the plate is in your name at ServiceOntario if you move, validate the plate is registered to the right vehicle at ServiceOntario if you change vehicles, and pay the plate sticker fee at the time of ownership transfer (typically $60-$120 per transfer).

ServiceOntario is the official source for plate status, ownership transfer, and any plate issues. Visit any ServiceOntario location (locations across the GTA - Vaughan Mills, Promenade Shopping Centre in Thornhill, Markham Road, Scarborough Town Centre, etc.) or online at ontario.ca/page/serviceontario.

For Henry's Honda buyers: the plate-sticker fee is included in the dealer's admin/transaction fee at delivery, and Maple Honda handles the ownership transfer paperwork directly with ServiceOntario. The buyer does not need to visit ServiceOntario for a typical dealer-sale transfer - the dealer submits the transfer paperwork electronically via the OMVIC registered dealer portal.

Vehicle ownership transfer in Ontario: the three paths

When ownership of a Honda changes in Ontario, the transfer paperwork follows one of three paths:

1. Path 1: Dealer sale (most common) - you buy your next Honda from Henry at Maple Honda (or any OMVIC-registered dealer). The dealer handles all paperwork with ServiceOntario. You walk out with the new car. No ServiceOntario visit needed.
2. Path 2: Private sale - you sell your Honda to another individual (your neighbour, your coworker, a private buyer from Kijiji or AutoTrader). Both parties must complete the ServiceOntario transfer within 6 days of the sale. The seller submits a Notice of Sale to ServiceOntario. The buyer transfers the ownership into their name at ServiceOntario.
3. Path 3: Inheritance / family transfer - if you inherit a Honda or receive one as a gift from family, the transfer requires different paperwork (the will or gift letter, plus the usual ownership doc + UVIP). ServiceOntario handles these and they're not subject to HST.

For the typical GTA Honda buyer, Path 1 (dealer sale) is the case. The dealer does all the paperwork. The buyer gets a temporary permit sticker on the rear plate while ServiceOntario processes the new ownership card (typically 4-6 weeks).

The UVIP: what it is and when you need it

The Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) is a $20 document from ServiceOntario that contains:

• The vehicle's lien history - whether there's an outstanding loan against the vehicle. Critical for the buyer's protection.
• The vehicle's branding history - whether the vehicle has ever been declared salvage, rebuilt, or branded as a lemon. Critical for safety and resale value.
• The odometer reading at last registration - the odometer reading when ServiceOntario last transferred ownership. Helps spot odometer rollbacks.

The UVIP is required for any private vehicle sale in Ontario. The dealer obtains their own UVIP when they buy a trade-in - the buyer does NOT need to obtain one when buying from a dealer. For private sales, the seller orders the UVIP from ServiceOntario ($20) and provides it to the buyer. The buyer then brings the UVIP to ServiceOntario when they register the vehicle in their name.

For a Honda buyer at Maple Honda: Henry obtains the UVIP for every trade-in before he buys it. You can request to see the UVIP for any trade-in vehicle on the lot - it's part of Maple Honda's standard inspection process. Henry can walk through the UVIP's three sections (lien history / branding / odometer) with you at the dealership in 5 minutes.

Bill of sale: required, structured, protect yourself

Per Ontario law, every vehicle sale requires a Bill of Sale. For private sales, the Bill of Sale documents:

• Buyer and seller full legal names and addresses
• VIN (17-character vehicle identification number on the dashboard)
• Sale price (in dollars)
• Sale date
• Both parties' signatures

For dealer sales (Path 1), the dealer provides a more detailed Bill of Sale as required by OMVIC - the dealer's Bill of Sale itemizes the vehicle MSRP, accessories, freight/PDI, documentation fee, HST (broken out), and any provincial sales tax applicable. The dealer keeps a copy for 7 years (OMVIC requirement).

For GTA Honda buyers from Henry: the Bill of Sale itemizes everything - you can see exactly what you paid for. Henry keeps a copy for 7 years and provides you with the original. Keep your Bill of Sale for the entire time you own the car - you'll need it for any warranty claim, any insurance claim, and any future sale.

Ontario safety standards certificate (SSC) - who pays

The Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) is required for any vehicle re-sold in Ontario:

• Dealer sales: the dealer provides the SSC at their cost - it's part of the reconditioning process before the dealer puts a trade-in on the lot. The cost is baked into the dealer's overhead.
• Private sales: the BUYER pays for the SSC - typically $500-$1,000 at a licensed Ontario inspection station. The seller is NOT required to provide one.

For GTA buyers, this is a meaningful difference between dealer sale and private sale. When Henry sells a Honda at Maple Honda, the SSC is done as part of the reconditioning. When you buy a Honda privately and skip the SSC, you can save the $500-$1,000 cost - but you cannot register the vehicle until you have the SSC, and the buyer can use the SSC as a negotiation lever to discount the price $500-$1,000 anyway.

Henry's advice for private sellers in Ontario: pay for the SSC upfront and use it as a marketing point. The SSC demonstrates the vehicle is roadworthy and ready to drive. Most private sellers who offer an SSC with their Honda command $500-$1,000 more on the sale price than those who don't.

Personalized / vanity licence plates on a Honda

Ontario allows personalized (vanity) licence plates on Honda vehicles. The process:

• Apply via ServiceOntario - either online at ontario.ca or at any ServiceOntario location. The format is 4-8 characters (letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens).
• Fee: $310 CAD annual surcharge on top of your regular plate fee. Renewal annually with vehicle registration.
• Availability: personalized plates are issued on a first-come basis. If your preferred plate is taken, you go on a waitlist or pick a different one.
• Transferability: a personalized plate stays with you, not the vehicle. If you sell your Honda and buy another, the personalized plate transfers to the new Honda automatically if you make the transfer request at ServiceOntario.

For GTA Honda buyers who want a personalized plate on their new Civic, Accord, or CR-V: Henry can submit the personalized plate application as part of the deal paperwork. It's an extra $310/year but it makes the car uniquely yours. Some popular GTA picks: "VAUGHAN", "HONDA FC", "6SPD SI", "R-TYPE" (for Civic Type R owners). ServiceOntario does reject plates that are offensive, impersonating official plates, or currently in use.

HST on licence plate fees

Ontario applies HST to most licence plate fees:

• Plate renewal fee: no HST (most passenger plates don't have a renewal fee anymore under the current system).
• Plate transfer fee at ownership change: $32 base + 13% HST = $36.16 typical. Plus the plate sticker fee of $60-$120 with HST.
• Personalized plate annual surcharge: $310 + 13% HST = $350.30 annual.
• UVIP: $20 flat - no HST.
• Safety Standards Certificate: varies by station - typically $500-$1,000 + 13% HST = $565-$1,130.

For the typical Honda buyer at Maple Honda: all plate transfer fees and HST are calculated by Henry and shown on your Bill of Sale itemization. You don't pay ServiceOntario separately for the plate transfer - it's part of the deal.
