The finance manager goes over the numbers and there is one more line item: Honda Plus Extended Warranty, anywhere from $1,400 to $4,400 MSRP depending on the term and the model. It is a real product, not a scam. The published prices are more reasonable than most third-party extended warranties. It is also not for everyone. The trick is knowing what it covers, what it does not, and how the math works out for your situation. Here is the straight version.
What your Honda already covers — for free
Every new Honda sold in Canada comes with a factory warranty at no extra cost. The numbers are the same across the lineup:
- 3 years or 60,000 km comprehensive coverage. Bumper-to-bumper, covering almost every mechanical and electrical component. Excluded: normal wear items (brake pads, wiper blades, tires) and scheduled maintenance (oil, filters). The kilometres and years run concurrently — whichever comes first ends the coverage.
- 5 years or 100,000 km powertrain coverage. Stacked on top of comprehensive. Covers the engine, transmission, and drivetrain specifically. After the 3-year comprehensive expires, you still have powertrain coverage until the 5-year or 100,000-km mark.
- 3 years of Roadside Assistance. Standard with every new Honda — towing, lockout, winching, trip interruption, and emergency message service across Canada and the continental United States.
- 8 years or 130,000 km emissions warranty on certain components, and 5 years with no kilometre limit on corrosion perforation. Both required by federal regulation and running on top of the main coverage.
Together, that means a brand-new Honda is well covered for at least the first 3 years and 60,000 km without buying anything extra. The extended warranty question really starts in year 4.
What Honda Plus adds on top
Honda Plus is Honda Canada's own extended warranty, sold at the dealer finance office. It is not a third-party product — claims are handled at any Honda dealer in Canada using genuine Honda parts by Honda-trained technicians. The contract is with Honda Canada, not an insurer you have never heard of.
- Comprehensive coverage similar to the factory 3-year coverage — the broadest level of protection available on a Honda. The same exclusions apply: wear items, maintenance, abuse, and modifications.
- $0 deductible. Different from most third-party warranties that carry a $100 or $200 deductible per visit.
- Transferable. If you sell before the plan ends, the new owner gets the remaining coverage at no transfer fee. A 4-year-old CR-V with three years of Honda Plus remaining is worth more than the same car without it.
- Roadside Assistance included for the full term, with trip interruption coverage up to $500 per incident if you are more than 100 km from home.
- 30-day full refund. Change your mind within 30 days of purchase — full money back. After 30 days, the refund is pro-rated. This is one of the best cancellation policies in the industry.
Actual published prices from honda.ca
Honda publishes its plan prices at honda.ca/en/honda-plus/extended-warranty. The price list is the same across all authorized Honda dealers in Canada. Here are the numbers directly from that list (prices effective December 6, 2025, date checked June 2026). All prices are MSRP — dealers may sell for less.
First Period of Coverage — bought at vehicle delivery, current 2025/2026 model year:
- Civic and Prelude: 4-year / 100,000 km — $1,420. 5-year / 120,000 km — $1,983.
- Accord and CR-V: 4-year / 100,000 km — $1,578. 5-year / 120,000 km — $2,128.
- Prologue (all-electric): 4-year / 100,000 km — $3,045. 5-year / 120,000 km — $3,860.
The 5-year / 120,000-km plan at delivery is the most popular option, because it picks up right when the factory powertrain warranty expires.
Comprehensive Protection Plan — added later to an eligible 2021–2024 model year vehicle with less than 100,000 km:
- 5-year / 100,000 km: Civic $1,890. Accord and CR-V $1,980.
- 6-year / 100,000 km: Civic $2,100. Accord and CR-V $2,290.
- 6-year / 160,000 km: Civic $2,720. Accord and CR-V $2,920.
- 7-year / 130,000 km: Civic $2,630. Accord and CR-V $2,780.
- 7-year / 160,000 km: Civic $2,990. Accord and CR-V $3,220.
- 7-year / 200,000 km: Civic $3,170. Accord and CR-V $3,720.
- 8-year / 130,000 km: Civic $3,070. Accord and CR-V $3,550.
- 8-year / 200,000 km: Civic $3,400. Accord and CR-V $4,310.
- 10-year / 160,000 km: Civic $3,540. Accord and CR-V $4,440.
Model year surcharge (added to the Comprehensive Protection Plan only): 2025/2026 model year — $0. 2024 — $200. 2023 — $300. 2022 — $400 (requires Honda Plus Inspection). 2021 — $500 (requires Honda Plus Inspection).
One detail that surprises people
Time and distance on the plan start from the original vehicle delivery date, not from when you sign the Honda Plus contract. Buy an 8-year plan on a 2-year-old car, and you have 6 years remaining — not 8. The Roadside Assistance portion, however, starts from the date you sign up.
When Honda Plus pays for itself
An extended warranty is not an investment — it is a way to trade a small predictable cost now for protection against a large unpredictable cost later. The math works out in your favour if any of these are true for you:
- You are keeping the car past year 5 or 100,000 km. After the factory powertrain warranty expires, you are exposed to the cost of any major mechanical repair. A transmission replacement on a modern Honda CVT is several thousand dollars. The Honda Plus term lines up with the years when those are the most likely repairs.
- You drive a lot of kilometres. A 30,000-km-a-year GTA commuter is far more likely to need a covered repair in year 6 than a 10,000-km-a-year weekend driver.
- You lease. Honda Plus covers most lease-end excess wear charges for non-wear items, and the deductible is $0. The 4-year / 100,000-km plan is the natural fit for a 3-year lease with a year of overlap.
- You cannot absorb a $3,000 to $5,000 surprise repair bill. If a major repair would genuinely disrupt your budget, the warranty is a hedge — it gives you a known ceiling on out-of-pocket costs during the term.
- You plan to sell privately. Transferable coverage adds real resale value. If you trade in to a dealer, the transfer does not help you directly — but the added value at trade-in time still works in your favour.
When Honda Plus does not pay off
- You trade every 3 years and the mileage stays under 60,000 km. The factory comprehensive warranty covers your entire ownership period. You are paying for coverage you will not use.
- You can self-insure. If you can comfortably set aside the equivalent of the warranty cost in an emergency fund and you do not lose sleep over a surprise repair bill, paying out of pocket for any repairs is reasonable. Many financially disciplined owners do exactly this.
- You are buying a base-trim commuter you plan to run into the ground. The older and simpler the car, the less there is to fail in a way the warranty would cover.
What is not covered — even with Honda Plus
- Normal wear items. Brake pads, rotors, wiper blades, tires, bulbs, fuses, the battery. Anything that wears out from use is owner responsibility.
- Maintenance. Oil changes, filters, fluids, scheduled service. Owner responsibility regardless of warranty.
- Damage from accidents, abuse, racing, off-road use beyond the vehicle design, or modifications. Standard insurance covers accidents; the warranty does not.
- Cosmetic items. Paint chips, scratches, dents, upholstery wear, interior trim. These are not mechanical failures.
- Pre-existing conditions. If a component was already showing problems before the plan started, it is not covered.
Myth check: four things people get wrong
- It is a third-party product. It is not — it is Honda Canada's own plan with claims at any Honda dealer in Canada.
- Every repair will be covered. No. Wear items, maintenance, abuse, and pre-existing conditions are excluded.
- It is required to keep the factory warranty valid. It is not. The factory warranty stays in force regardless. Just keep up with the Maintenance Minder schedule.
- It is the same as a third-party extended warranty. No — third-party plans usually come with deductibles, claim approval processes, and limits on where you can have work done.
Common questions
Is the price at the dealer the same as the honda.ca price?
The published price list on honda.ca is the maximum a dealer can charge. They may sell for less — especially on a competitive deal or if you ask. Always ask for the exact dollar amount in writing before you sign.
Is Honda Plus available on a used car?
Yes — the Comprehensive Protection Plan is available on Canadian-spec Honda vehicles with less than 100,000 km on the odometer. A Honda Plus Inspection is required for 2021 and 2022 model year vehicles before the plan is issued.
What about the Honda Prologue (electric)?
The high-voltage battery is covered by a separate 8-year / 160,000-km factory warranty. Honda Plus is available for the rest of the vehicle. The plans are priced significantly higher than gas models because the powertrain is more expensive to cover.
How do I know if the 5-year plan is right for me?
Multiply your annual kilometres by the years you plan to own the car. If the total is over 100,000 km, the powertrain warranty will expire before you are done with the car. Honda Plus becomes more valuable the further over 100,000 km that number is.
